Chevrolet had a hot new number for 1966 full-size cars: “427”, an even bigger big block V8 with 390 or 425 horses. A new grille and taillights updated the styling. Chevy followed up on the success of the 65 Caprice hard top sedan by adding wagons and two door with its own greenhouse for 66.  Total Caprice output: 181,000 units.
A standard bigblock 396 V8 and smooth new styling gave Chevy salesmen plenty to talk about in the mid size 1966 Chevelle Malibu Super Sport or SS396.  A three speed manual was standard, but four on the floor wand “Turbo-Hydro” automatic were available.  Incredibly, the hardtop coupe started at $2776, the convertible at $2984 – huge performance bargains, to say the least. The Two models accounted for 72,300 sales.
With GM mandating no further development after 1965, Chevy’s Corvair changed little from then on.  Yet it remained a desirable semi-sports car, and looked terrific.  The Monza Sport Coupe cost $2350; 37,605 were built.  As in 1965, Corvair offered the pillar less four door sedan body style in base “500” trim ad sportier Monza trim, and produced 12,497 of the latter priced at $2424.  The 95-horse flat six was unchanged.
Chevy dropped “fulie” small blocks for 1966, leaving a big new 427 with up to 425 horses as Corvette’s ultimate 1966 power option.  It came with a domed hood.  The $4295 coupe sold 9958 this year.
