1979: Mercury’s Trap Door
Concept cars are a lot of fun and most often are used for the introduction of new styling ideas. In this case, new was old, but the car was Mercury’s Ghia-designed XM. The rumble seat may surface yet, mainly for making 4-seaters out of cars with only two. This design saves the weight of the extra sheet metal, upholstery, padding, etc. needed for the extra interior space. But what happens when it rains?
