1980: Mercury’s Kitten Gets Ready for Competition?

The sporty model of Lincoln-Mercury Division’s Lynx front-drive hatchback initially was to be designated RS, and thought of to be IMSA/SCCA ready, as seen by this artist rendering.  It featured blanked off grille and headlights wiht under bumper air induction for the supposed 1600cc SOHC engine, integrated front and rear wheelwell flares, a standoff rear roof spoiler, and a modified whaletail rear soler section to hold down the light rear end at ful tilt speeds on longer courses. Ford Motor Company was really dreaming up ways to showcase its new 80’s front drive babies on North American racing circuits.
