1981 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Dealer Promotional Training Video

Cadillacs are special. Especially considering that in the early 80s Cadillac offered a unique variable displacement engine, that despite it being renowned for being a relative failure, was quite advanced for 1981. Other features included power pull down trunk lid, fully in dependant load leveling suspension, four wheel disc brakes, automatic climate control, the list goes on. The V8-6-4 was touted as a masterpiece. Was this Cadillacs greatest work? It was the Cadillac of failures.

I think the general idea on which the engine based was brilliant, but they weren’t able to get rid of the kinks within a reasonable time frame, mostly due to lackluster electronic speed as the chips at the time couldn’t operate fast enough, and thus Cadillac had to scrap it.
Since, variable displacement has become more common and works just fine. Maybe GM should take another stab at it with their newer engines…

I believe the offered a technology called ‘DOD’ (displacment on demand) on their small block family of engines, particularly in their fullsize pickups.

You’re right, they did it on the Vortec 5300, I forgot that. And I just read they use it on the Camaro SS as well. Maybe this would work on 6 cyl engines as well?

My 1st Cadillac was a 1981 Eldorado I purchased used in 1991 with 75k. The body & interior was in excellent shape but the V864 Engine was running on 4 cylinders. I called my local Cadillac dealership & they assisted me via phone to solve the problem by 1st unhooking the battery,2nd cut the wires to the solenoid plate on the firewall. Once I hooked the battery back up & started it up, she was running on all 8 cylinders again. I had 2 other 1981’s One was a diesel that died out on me in March 1999 before I was going to convert it to gas. My last 1981 Eldorado was a V6. My other Eldorados are a 1982 & currently a 1985.
