1981 Chevrolet Sport Van Promo Video

Lloyd Reuss, father of Mark Reuss, today’s VP of GM N/A, then director of Chevrolet engineering describes the two basic direction a manufacture takes when improving a vehicle. One, is the less often more expensive, changing of the platform and shape, also known as a full redesign, or the less costly, improvement of the packaging, also known as a refresh. Since we all know that this gen Chevy Van stuck around through 1995, you can imagine their take on a full redesign ONLY ten or so years into the cycle! Claims of aerodynamic styling are not horribly absurd. Rounded corners, that actually contributed to one of the nicer looking vans of the era if you ask me, but to offer drag coefficient numbers that are on par with passenger cars, are difficult to prove.

Having had fond memories as a child spending many summer days riding with family friends out and about in a Beauville rendition, this video promo certainly takes me back, that and the fact that Tony and Samantha Micelli drove a similar van in the opening credits to ‘Who’s the Boss”, lends to the cool factor. One thing I want to know is how many prospects actually saw this vid, let alone were swayed? But if it were me and I was introduced to a flare test like the one presented in the video, it would be hard to decline. So here’s to Chevy’s BMW, Big Mormon Wagon, and its many years of service!
