Civic would have been the real sleeper in the economy subcompact class. The 2-door front drive hatchback was noticeably larger than the previous model, had greater glass area and a bit more rear seat leg and knee room. Many of the interior appointments looked much like those of the deluxe Accord models, but they lent a utilitarian rather than a poshy atmosphere to the car.
With the 5-speed transmission, quick positive steering and full 4-wheel independent suspension, the Civic out performed many of the small so called sporty models and still provided adequate 4-passenger carrying capacity. EPA figured about 41 MPG combined city, highway. Your mileage may have varied.
