“From the start, theres that prestigious diesel sound”
Still all out for diesel power, Olds introduced the 85 bhp 4.3liter V6 unit in 1982, and it returned for 83 as an option for both front and rear drive versions of Cutlass. Along with the V6 was a 5.7 liter V8 diesel on selected models.

Hilarious – I once drove a Cadillac/Olds diesel across Iowa. It couldn’t maintain 60 mph over the rolling hills of Iowa. Hopeless even before the engine self-destructed.

Hahaha… I live in Iowa and we have by NO means huge hills here. lol

I had a 307 in my ’81 olds Toronado and it was OK, but by no means a power house either.

Did they honestly use gas motors and turn them into diesels? If so, DAMN!

Thank you for sharing! I really enjoying watching the Oldsmobiles of that era. That is when Oldsmobile were selling a lot of cars.

I miss Oldsmobile and would have liked to experience that diesel. I know there were problems but I wish Oldsmobile continuously improved upon them and in a hurry.

By the mid 80’s these engines were not too bad. I remember seeing a lot of them get over 100,000 miles. A lot of gas cars died at 100-150,000 miles back then. Poor engine oil quality as compared to today’s oils, poor fuel quality, and under trained technicians in the service departments didn’t help these cars. A lot of cars of the early to mid 80’s had around 100 horsepower. Look back at the 0-60 mph test back then. Today’s cars average around 8 seconds, back then 16 seconds was normal. My family had several GM diesels and they were all ok. They had some problems, but they had problems with gas cars at times as well. My uncle had a V-6 FWD 98 and he got it up to just over 200,000 miles before he sold it. I remember how everyone thought that 200,000 miles back then was like an Olympic record for any car. Today most all car can hit 200,000 miles if taken halfway good care of.

From now on when I hear a dump truck, a city bus, or construction equipment working, I’ll think of that “prestigious” diesel sound..lol. That music could be used in an 80’s sci-fi movie. Interesting vid and thanks for sharing another with us.

I just bought an 82 Fleetwood Brougham D’Elegance with the diesel, engine was just rebuilt with new headbolts
