Introduced for 1983, Ford’s radical new Thunderbird must have been a frightening realization for the marketers at Chevrolet. So much so, that this footage of how to sell against the T-bird was produced.

Responding to one model with two, apparently was what GM had in mind when training its sales reps. Though their claims of higher standard seating capacity, better fuel economy, larger interior volume, more cargo room, lower standard prices, and a higher towing capacity, sounds legitimate, most could easily be countered. Primarily, the idea of cross shopping a rear drive personal coupe, with a front drive family mid-sizer. If that was the case, then the T-bird could have been considered against many other vehicles with two doors.

Obviously the Monte Carlo was the more suitable challenger in this training bout, against the Thunderbird. However, if you pay attention, and take notes, you just may be able to persuade the next person you meet, if that meeting begins with a conversation about the exploration of the three aforementioned vehicles. Good selling!

Watching that narrator made me confused. He looks like a kid but has the voice of a 50 year old man and Humphrey Bogart’s mouth. I wonder whatever became of him? Probably ended up in prison, but could have been famous as a game show host. Guess he missed the boat.
