1984: Chevrolet’s Plague of Z

For 1985 Chevrolet offered two new Z-cars to accompany the popular Z28, one hot one hotter. The more potent of the pair was the IROC-Z, and played off the newly revived International Race of Champions, which was run with modified Z28s.  The IROC-Z was reported to sport a revised front fascia with softer contours.  The new nose was said to wear a set of flush fitting aero lights by the close of the 1985 model year.

Compared to the Z28, the IROC iteration appeared starkly monochromatic.  The rocker panel extensions were finished in body color, and the duo-tone side striping of the standard Z was eliminated. Reports indicated the 3-piece tail spoiler fitted to the Z28 would be replaced by a rubber wedge at the base of the rear window  a la Saab Turbo.

Chevy’s second Z-car addition for 1985 landed down amongst the divisions J-body offering and was called the Cavalier Z24.
