1988 Buick Reatta Test Drive

While I never understood Buick’s reasoning for offering two coupes at the time, I was fond of the looks of the new for 1988 Reatta, vs the Riviera! Having more designs for couples, than any other manufacturer, including the Allante, Fiero and of course Corvette, adding the Reatta, provided Buick one for their lineup. Despite the awkward overhang proportions provided by the shared platform, the overall aesthetics of the hand built Reatta was indeed quite pleasing. Being a Buick was enough to confirm this is not a sports car, but being front wheel drive, ads to that debate! The name Reatta is “..Derived from the Spanish American word for Lariat, or Lasso…” and Buick hopes to rope its share of fans.

I wanted to read a road test of the first series Reatta. No Reatta road test. Nice. I am quite familiar with the car – my `89 is a great daily driver. I wondered how it tested as a new car. The Reatta goes,……OK, handles quite good and is very comfortable. I had to get a parts car because of the hide-a-way headlights and almost all parts availability – I redesigned the lights using the small rectangular lights introduced in 1976 and let the lids rest on them. The lid is open less than 4 inches. Adding a surface for the light to rest in, and sides to enclose it, the new lights give the car a mildly aggressive appearance – with none of the `cheap mechanism` that hide-a-way headlights provide. I enjoy the car very much. It draws more attention than I`d like but less than my other cars.
