1988: New class of S Class

Spied early for a 1990 European debut, Mercedes S-Class seen here in full camouflage, didn’t arrive to the US until 1992! Also speculated, was Russian brand Moskvich 2141 powered by a VW engine to meet US emission regulation, was thought to be headed here also!

  1. I remember sitting in this model when it debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show. I was a huge fan of the previous S-Class design and felt let down by its new shape.

Also, sort of interesting to hear the announcer refer to the “Soviet Union” towards the end of the piece.

when was the w140 model premiered in the U.S.? I saw pictures of the w140 of its prototype origins and its European premiere in Geneve!
