1988 Subaru XT-6 Test Drive

Wonder wedge.

Once considered the most aerodynamic car on the market when it arrived n the scene in 1985, gaining a 0.29 drag coefficient, made possible partially thanks to Subaru’s infamous flat four engine design. Inside the theme was just as exclusive, with a cockpit design, digital gauges that were attached to the steering wheel, as to maintain visibility regardless of position, thumb actuated on demand 4wd switch in the center of the gear select, height adjustable suspension, the list goes on! A techno marvel of its time. Sales of the XT were never strong, throughout its entire seven year production run, selling 23,947 in 1986, and 17,901 in 1987. For its exclusivity, I still want one. We all have guilty pleasures, for me this is one.

Craig Singhoss(sp?) is awesome! That interior is one of the most inefficient ones I’ve seen. I DO love me some Subies though.

I didn’t know this car even existed! Subaru really does make some quirky cars.

The mental image of the guy falling into the back seat will always be my first mental image with this car.

Not a horrible car, but not a great one either. No wonder the Impreza came along.

This could be a future collector car because not too many are around anymore.

Bought a new ’88 XT 6, it was white, absolutely mint condition….then the head gasket went at 100,00 mi. I was devastated!

I knew there were a few things I didn’t like about Subaru cars before 1990. The climate control (or HVAC) system needed improvement. In addition, some Subaru models from those days were not noted for their reliability, according to Consumer Reports. However, I could be wrong.
