The Allanté never sold as well as Cadillac originally forecast, but this failed to diminish its vitality as a driver’s car or its importance as a Cadillac. For 1989, the family 4.5-liter engine used in other Cadillac’s at 155 hp went into Allanté developing a robust 200 HP and 265 lb-ft of torque. The chassis was refined for higher performance as well, now offering a Speed Dependent Damping system. Essentially a 4-wheel independent “smart suspension,” it automatically changed the Delco deflected disc shock settings from compliant to normal to firm.
This gave Cadillac signature ride qualities at slower speeds without sacrificing tautness necessary to manage higher speed running. Firmness was also dialed in during acceleration and deceleration to minimize squat and dive. Four-wheel power disc brakes with Bosch III ABS continued as standard gear.
Sales rose modestly from the previous year’s 2569, to 3296.
