1994 Ford Thunderbird & Mercury Cougar Preview

Out of phase.

These coupes lost their popularity because they had not effectively adapted to the restraints of the time. Born too large and too heavy, they had no sportiness other than their name and styling, and a model from the Taurus SHO would be much more appreciated by the enthusiasts. From an identical platform and mechanics, these two coupes each offerws a different diametrically opposed personality. The Thunderbird was sporty, while the Cougar luxurious. The Thunderbird was sold in models LX and SC, and the Cougar only as the XR7. The 3.8L-V6 naturally aspirated isn’t in the Cougar XR7 and the basic T-bird, while that of the sporty SC comes with a compressor from Roots. The 5.0L-V8, replaced this year with the 4.6L, is an option on the T-Bird and XR7 basic models.

They did not keep up with the times as you stated. you can see how Lincoln Mark VIII influenced these cars. Something is missing from these cars. I do not know what it is.. They were roomy. I will give them that.

Thanks Baja for posting this road test. I owned the same 1994 Cougar as shown in the test, right down to 4.6 V8 and the same maroon color. I had it back in 2010 as a daily driver for my C4 Corvette, it only had 70,000 miles then. That Cougar was an excellent cruiser and that interior/dash was more upscale than the price tag suggested. It wasn’t the fastest car but it could move out when I wanted it to. I sold it after only a year and I miss that car all the time. I want to get another 94 or 95 4.6 Cougar soon. Didn’t like the 96+ updates.
