1992: New Bird Rises From the Fire
Predicted in 1991 and confirmed by 1992, Pontiac’s second J-car was cloned from the exotic 1991 Sunfire show car.
Unfortunately the interesting rear half-door that opened suicide style, creating wide and pillarless access to the rear passenger compartment, expectedly did not make it to production. The illustrations shown here, made from rough sketches provided by GM insiders, pictures the coupe. Much of the Sunfire’s fluid design translated to the production car, including the radically aggressive font end that blended Corvette and Firebird themes without the hidden headlamps.
