1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Test Drive
Bowing as an early 1993 model, this compact 4×4 wagon was the first new Jeep since Chrysler acquired the nameplate in1987, though its design was by previous parent American Motors. It was also the first sport-utility with a driver-side air bag. Grand Cherokee was the upscale companion for the Cherokee.
While the GC generally followed the Ford Explorer pricing structure, the $27,433 Limited was nearly $4000 above the top-line Eddie Bauer. However, the new Jeep boasted more standard features than the Fords, and other competitors, with the standard air bag, superior 4-wheel ABS, and sophisticated 4WD systems . Add in good performance, capable suspension and competitive passenger/cargo space, and the GC was a mighty newcomer.
