1994 Chevrolet Impala SS Test Drive
Chevy revived the nostalgic Impala SS handle for a heated up 1994 Caprice with a 260-horse version of the Corvette LT1 V8,plus unique styling touches and police inspired chassis tuning. Base price was just $22,495, quite a bargain. It is really too bad that the future of GM’s large rear-wheel drive sedans was not bright, not successful enough to encourage designers to come up with a future generation. More muscle. Less mass, it could have moved ahead of a few European competitors. Alleged prototypes with six speed manual transmission and 300p engines were seen out testing on the track. But those could have been the ‘Jon Moss’ edition car that we all know and love. The Impala SS lasted a scant three model years, ending production with its more plebeian stable mates for the 1996 model year.

At least we’re finally getting it’s successor in the form of the Chevrolet SS (and ironically, the supposed-to-be-police-only Caprice)….
no, we are not getting its successor. what is simply known as just the “SS”(joke of a name btw) is actually a Holden, imported from Australia just like the G8. The real Impala SS name won’t be revived any time soon, fwd is cheaper to produce and automakers have been heading in that direction for years.

The 96 Impala SS is a future classic collector’s car and it’s the only valuable one, because 96 was the only year that Chevy made it with a floor mounted gear lever and instrument cluster with tachometer. Sadly 96 was also the last year for the Impala SS and just about every other B-body car.
GM used the growing SUV demand as a BS excuse to stop making cars. I say BS because Ford kept making SUVs and the panther body cars, so clearly there was a demand for these RWD fullsize cars, no wonder police decided to refurbish the 94-96 9c1 Caprice after GM stopped making them. Police in fact never liked the Crown Victoria, but they had no other choice other than the Crown Vic if they wanted a RWD sedan.
No wonder GM went bankrupt years later… Their executives have their heads way up their own asses and never cared about the customers demands.
