1996: 1997 Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer
Ford showed its 1997 Escort, and twin the Mercury Tracer early. Riding on the same basic platform as the 1996 model, the new cars were longer, taller but narrower than before. Blamed primarily on the ‘barely’ mid-size Contour/Mystique twins that were only slightly larger.

223,000 miles on 97 escort. Burns no oil or tranny fluid. Just replaced original alternator. 27 mpg around town. Still quiet engine. Low insurance. Great work car.
