2001 Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo Test Drive
Maybe “everything old is new again”, but in its third year Volkswagen’s New Beetle was still turning heads. Its underpinnings, from VW’s Golf, were up to date and solid. Three 4-cylinder engineers were offered – a 2.0 115hp fuel injected base model; the efficient, torque laden 1.9 liter, 90hp turbo diesel that gave the sound of an old Beetle; or the smooth 1.8 liter turbocharged 4 also available in the Passat and Audi A4. A 5-speed manual was standard and a 4-speed automatic was optional on all models.
