Volkswagen’s Jetta began life as a three box version of Volkswagen’s successful Golf, sold as the Rabbit in America. Available in both coupe, and four door sedan versions, and was a reasonable seller, but I believe the model did not really take off in sales until the second gen (MKII), when it debuted in 1985. This front wheel drive sub compact is directly derived from the Rabbit, launched in 1974. The GTI appeared the following year and the Jetta as well as the convertible in 1979. Redesigned in 1985, they were again manufactured at Wolfsburg, West Germany with the convertible being made by Karmann at Osnabruk.
