This front wheel drive sub compact is directly derived from the Rabbit, launched in 1974. The GTI appeared the following year and the Jetta as well as the convertible in 1979. Redesigned in 1985, they were again manufactured at Wolfsburg, West Germany with the convertible being made by Karmann at Osnabruk.
