1972 Opel 1900 Test Drive
The GT was Opel’s spoiler, the short, svelte sister of the frumpy Kadett…same chassis, different bodywork. Then, at the Paris Auto Show in September, 1970, Opel introduced their Manta; an anti-Capri, built to fight the European Mustang that was ringing up impressive sales throughout the continent. With styling that made it look flatteringly like a BMW 2800 CS coupe, the Manta came off as a nice partner for the GT, the two offering similar styling, identical drive-trains and a choice of 2, or 4-places. We began to get the Manta in the U.S. in late 1970, though GM decided to drop the Manta name for the “1900” designation.
