Don Meredith’s father told him as a youngster “if it’s a fight between a good big man, and a good small man, take the big one every time”. This is the winning strategy Pontiac took when trying to market its newly reshaped full-size Catalina/Bonneville lineup. Comparing its extremely fuel efficient Diesel to many mid-size models, and just as many compacts. Spinning the efficiency to number of days between fill ups is a matrix of mileage I have never heard of before, luckily this method rating did not spill outside the company, as I am sure our litigious nature would have had a hay day (see current day Honda Civic Hybrid). What is even stranger is Pontiac’s comparison to its corporate cousins from Chevrolet and Oldsmobile. Apparently back then GM was all about family contention. Revamped body contours and a revised engine lineup (including shelving the 350 gas V-8) helped improve fuel economy – as Washington demanded – on 1980 full-size Pontiac’s. The Bonneville Brougham sedan cost $8160; 21,249 were built.
Wow. Just wow. I liked how they mentioned Oldsmobile NInety Eight a lot and I loved all the photos and images of the Bonneville. This car had some great looks. Thank you for sharing.
