31982 DMC Delorean Test Drive
Before ‘Back to the Future’ the movie, we were introduced to this Silver Bullet, via former General Motors executive John Delorean. Manufactured in northern Ireland, incorporating a unique fiberglass under body, covered in stainless steel sheets, featuring the famous gull wing doors, and powered by an engine developed by Peugeot-Renault-Volvo. As sporty as it looked, and perhaps as sporty as it was intended to be, the performance was rather lacking, pulling off 0-60 in this feature vid, of 10 seconds. Also noted, not unlike most rear engined cars, “if you take a turn too fast…all that rear weight can sent the back end into the bush”. Even if the lack of combustible motivation doesn’t match the cars sporty pretensions, the Delorean has since always been more about aesthetics, that and it being featured in that previously mentioned 80s iconic film. Now you can say to John Davis, “you did a Road Test…………in a DeLorean?”
At my work, there is a garage I have to go to sometimes, and he has three Deloreans (he’s primarily a Volvo mechanic). One is a twin turbo if I’m not mistaken.
deloreans are just plain cool.
Seemed like the right idea, but at the wrong time. This took place during the 1981-1982 recession years. Fortunately, though, I came across a Delorean in July 2011, at a classic car show in Lakewood, CO.
