How could Chevrolet acquire exiting, new, high performance cars without appearing to ignore GM’s directive to de-proliferate divisional model lineups? By purchasing them from Japanese partners of course. Chevrolet planners were looking at the Toyota FX16, assembled in Fremont California’s NUMMI plant (now occupied by Tesla). Insiders suggested this would have been a quick way for the apple pie division to acquire a very hot new car at a bargain basement price.
