31988 Isuzu Impulse Preview Test Drive
Loosely based on Chevrolet’s Chevette, Italdesign did a remarkable job of hiding the source for this cult favorite sporty car! It arrived in the US as a 1983 and was marketed as ‘everything standard’, coming with, other than engine, no options. Turbo was offered up two years later. All Impulses received a Lotus-tuned suspension beginning in the 1988 model year, which consisted of redesigned sway bars, stiffer dampers, and a change in previous spring rates. To me, the rear treatment always resembled Germany’s 928, now the Impulse touted British handling, Japanese quality, and Italian design (Giorgetto Giugiaro), and American roots. Sounds global to me!
Then it evolved into the Geo Storm
the second gen impulse was a neat little car, should try and find one… Handling by Lotus ftw!
It’s more like a “stretched Chevette” in a similar manner the 1975-79 Seville were to the 1975-79 Nova.
