1988 Pontiac Bonneville SSE – A Sports Sedan, American Style
Who says America couldn’t build a potent sports sedan? The we-build-excitement folks at Pontiac certainly weren’t listening to that theory when they detailed the changes to their already impressive Bonneville SE. The result, the Bonneville SSE, caused ears to perk up at the sound of a throaty-rumble exhaust note and heads to turn at the Darth Vader, bad-boy styling.
“This is a Pontiac?”, and “You can buy one from the dealer equipped like this?”, were common inquiries back in the day. For you $22,500, you’d get the Euro-look aerodynamic side skirts, airdams, deck mounted rear td drugstore cowboy, all hat and no cattle. The look was right, the handling was right, even the equipment was right, bt there wasn’t enough power to back up the look. The people at Pontiac were known for doing things right , so there was hope, the power oversight would be corrected. But that wouldn’t be amended until 1992.
