Most of Toyota’s 1988 lineup had a few new tricks, yet none bristled with high tech trickery like the Celica All Trac Turbo.
The Car’s cornerstone was its turbocharged two liter sixteen valve four cylinder engine with horsepower and torque output, both at 190. Full time four wheel drive helped the Celica put its power to good use, with a 50/50 distribution. Unfortunately all this goodness added weight, 532 more than the GTS to be exact. The Celica All-trac Turbo not only showed all the signs of being a great car, it also showed what great things happened at Toyota back then!
WOW! That MPG is HORRIBLE! I average 23 in my 400bhp G8. Amazing what’s been done since then. Still, it was a good looking car with very decent power. I bet turbo lag was nuts on it! Kind of looked like it on the drag strip.
Had one – new 88 with all the options. Fantastic car. Would scoot IF the driver knew how to drive it – the test driver did NOT! And stating that it “felt” like it didn’t handle is further proof that the driver didn’t really test its cornering capacity. That is only done by testing to failure with appropriate instrumentation to qualify the cars actual performance. It stomped ALL competitors in impromptu back road challenges for 8 years. Sold mine to someone who promised to race it in ralleye competition in the Philippines.
The proof of this car’s performance is in the three world ralleye championships. And I wouldn’t care what mileage it got! Not in the least.
