31990 Volkswagen Passat Test Drive
The original Passat, initially sold in the states as the ‘Dasher’, overall much smaller than it’s domestic mid size rivals, evolved into a sedan that matched, if not beat them in key dimensions. In fact, to date, this was the largest Volkswagen ever, and it validated that point, with a rear seat that not only adjusted fore and aft, but provided room that surpassed the Chevrolet Lumina, and Ford Taurus of the day. Some faults that surfaced were the near industry wide use of electronic automatic front safety belts, that plagued many cars through the early 90s, and window switches that were potentially activated by a lazy left leg. Despite more ‘misses’ than ‘hits’, the grown up VW still presented traits that made a Volkswagen, a Volkswagen like ‘the instinctive feel’ known as Fahrvergnügen proved by it’s handling tenacity of its smaller Jetta GLI kin!
I’m just wondering, before the US dollar was devalued, did, say, a Mercedes provide the same value for money as a Cadillac?
Not sure?
I love the Passat!!
