31994 Toyota Celica Test Drive
By wanting to be different, Toyota came to the point of being excluded from the sports coupe market, with designs far from mainstream popular appeal. The Melted cheese aspect of the previous versions, were happily replaced by the the 1994’s more successful lines.
The 94′ Toyota Celica was its sixth generation. In some aspects its inspired from its big sister the Supra. After experimenting on the previous model with futuristic tendencies, more or less successful, its lines returned to normal. The styling of the two bodies, a two door coupe ST and a three door coupe GT were very successful. Visually, these cars differ little, as the rear end treatment were almost identical, and you have to look carefully to differentiate the liftback from the separate trunk model.
I preferred the Celica before this, they still look good. With this generation, the look of the double-round headlights didn’t work for me.
I didn’t like this generation Celica because the engines offered in the U.S. models were underpowered compared to the rest of the competition at the time(turbocharged Eclipses and DOHC VTEC Integras). Toyota should’ve offered a turbo option like they did in Japan.
I agree whole-heartedly. There was no reason for them to give us a 135hp 1.8 as a GT. We should have at LEAST received the 2.0 3S-GE. It’s pretty much the All-trac engine with the turbo taken off. makes approx 155-170 hp in N/A tune. Would’ve been MUCH more competitive.
