Heralded newcomer in the RV world, was the GMC 26-foot motorhome, first ever from Detroit. The clean-looking rig had huge panoramic windows and loads of interior space. It had a front-drive chassis and was powered by a big 455-cid Olds Toronado engine. The tandem rear wheels merely trailer, but all four were equipped with brakes to assist in stopping this big vehicle. It had power steering and an automatic transmission modified for motorhome use. There were air valves in the driver’s compartment that permitted raising or lowering the vehicle front to rear, or side to side, for leveling loads or adjusting to uneven ground. The rig had a 10,500-pound gross vehicle weight.
