21973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Test Drive
Not sure if the gloomy intro music to this review foreshadows the auto industry for the era, but it certainly pertains! When you consider Oldsmobile officials summarizing that drivability, performance and fuel economy have been ‘Maintained’ over the previous model, instead of improved is a bit of a notion. Either way, this “old Cutlass, in a NEW box’ is a good looking evolution that would eventually become an American best seller! Some of my favorite, if not innovative features on this model were the swivel front seats, that unclear tome as to why this feature never swept the industry! Along with bumpers and grille inserts that gave way under minor impacts were pretty impressive, and according to Lindeman “enough goodies to run the window sticker all the way around the car”. It is obvious by this time capsule footage, that the early 70s were the beginning of the slugs. With figures like 10.8 from not to 70mph, “the 455 is not a neck snapper”, commentary like “Zowie watch that nose dive” during braking tests, and having to watch the Car & Track exclusive reverse spin to determine the suspension, despite the 442’s suspension package that included front and rear stabilizer bars, higher spring and shock rates, was soft seems a bit glaring. Along with these supposed suspension enhancements, the 442 package also included hood louvers, side, hood, and deck striping. With that said, it looks like appearance packages will become the norm for industry for quite some time!
