The first new-generation Volkswagen was the front wheel drive Passat, a derivative of the Audi 80, and it came in 1973. The firm was in danger of folding in 1974 but was mainly saved by the Giugiaro styled Golf and Scirocco, both featured front wheel drive and used the same running gear. The original Golf was introduced in 1974. In its most basic form it featured a 1093cc overhead camshaft engine and soon became one of the most popular small hatchbacks in the world. US built Golfs were given the name Rabbit, along with slightly different trim and lights.
