11975 Jaguar XJ-S Test Drive
There were many rivals to the Aston Martin. Chief among the British ones was the V12 Jaguar XJ-S, which had a checkered career since its introduction in 1975. This unfortunately coincided with the fuel crisis, and the concept of a high performance 2+2 seater which could only deliver 14 mpg was not in keeping with the times. Nor did it fit into the Jaguar image, being in no way a successor to the E-type sports car, or as spacious as the saloons. The first five years after its introduction were ones of poor build quality at Jaguar, which again didn’t help, and in 1980 manufacturing of the XJ-S was halted for a few months.
