Six years after introducing “the biggest Chevrolet ever,” Chevy launched a downsized Caprice designed in the wake of the early ’70s energy crisis. Average price for a gallon of gas in 1977 was 62 cents ($2.31 adjusted for inflation in 2011 dollars), up 72% from 1971 (36 cents). An ad for the new model said: “We made it right for the times without making it wrong for the people.” •1977 Chevrolet U.S. vehicle sales: 3,372,324 •U.S. market share: 23.5% Full-size ’77 Chevrolets looked clean and trim on their newly downsized 116-inch B-body platform.
