Fuel economy was the name of the game in the 1970s, as we became aware that petroleum resources were finite and gasoline prices were going to continue to increase. with the furl conservation concern came the advent of the EPA’s estimates for miles per gallon. The leader in 1977’s MPG was the Honda Civic CVCC with 5-speed transmission. For 1977, the Civic 5-speed posted 54 mpg in the EPA highway cycle. This was the highest highway cycle figure ever posted by any car, gasoline or diesel, since the EPA program was initiated. The city cycle mpg number was also impressive at 41.
