01978 AMC Pacer Manufacturer Promo
At long last the Pacer had what it had always been in dire need of. Power. The 304cid 2-bbl V-8 option was available on all Pacers, in any state of trim. For 1978, the base Pacer and the Pacer X were dropped, as the D/L became the new Pacer Sport. Like the D/L package equipped Concord, the new ‘base’ Pacer had such standard features as color keyed wheel covers, individual reclining seats, custom interior accents, electric clock, special insulation package and whitewall tires, and, with a few exceptions, the Pacer’s Sport option list reads about like the Concord’s optional Sport pack. Under the hood bulge rested the Pacer’s standard 232cid inline six, carried over from last year as the base engine with 258cid six or 304 V8 engines offered as options. Transmission availability included 3 and 4-speed manual gearboxes, or 3-speed automatic with the sixes; a 3-speed automatic was the sole transmission offered with the V8.
