Like it or not, Lincoln-Mercury stopped importing the German-made Capri sport coupe after 1978. In its place, however, L-M would add an all*new U.S.-made Capri. The new car was about the same size as the German car, and offered as a hatchback coupe only.
The 1979 Capri was built on a shortened Fairmont/Zephyr floor pan, which it shared with the also-new-for-1979 Ford Mustang (thought to be called Mustang III).
Reasons for the shift of Capri production from Germany were the rising cost of labor in Germany and the ever-increasing disparity between the German mark and the dollar.
