The Cutlass line got the new GM “A” body for 1978, and the new size resulted in sales-weighted weight reduction of 657 lb. Three basic body styles were offered, the “Aero” (sloping-back), in two and four door form, a two-door notchback, and a wagon. The Cutlass model names, in ascending level were Salon, Salon Brougham, Supreme, Supreme Brougham, Calais and Cruiser Wagon. The 4-4-2 trim option was offered on the Salon and Salon Brougham coupes and included a blackout grille, drip moldings, body lock pillar applique, wide belt moldings, wheel opening and rocker panel panel moldings, and a wide stripe with 442 identification on the bottom of the deck lid. The General Motors 231 cubic inch V6 engine was standard for the Cutlass. Sedans and coupes were offered with the 260 cubic inch V8 in all states. The 305 cubic inch V8 option except at high altitudes.
