01978: Volkswagens Small Car Breeds Like Rabbits
Production of the Volkswagen Rabbit in Pennsylvania was scheduled to begin in early 1978 with the 3-door Rabbit. Later, the 5-door would be added, allegedly followed by the three models illustrated here. The first of the new range was the notchback, which ultimately became the Jetta, and was simultaneously introduced in Europe. The pickup version was rumored to be offered only as a diesel and was mainly intended for the U.S. market. The station wagon would finish the Rabbit lineup before a new generation of front-wheel-drive VW’s were introduced for the mid-Eighties.
