The Dodge Truck Division of Chrysler Corporation jumped into the mini-pickup truck wars with a strong entry, the D50, made for Dodge by Mitsubishi.  The smoothly styled slab-side pickup was built on a 109.4-inch-wheelbase chassis with an overall length of 184.6 inches and a bed length of 6.5 feet.  The truck used leaf spring rear suspension with upper and lower control arms and recirculating ball steering, manual only.  The D50 series had a 2-liter (122cid) 4-cylinder OHC Mitsubishi engine with Silent Shaft balancing system and MCA-Jet exhaust emission control system, backed by a standard 4-speed transmission.  The optional engine was a 2.6-iter (156cid) engine with the same features, and a5-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic was optional.  The D50 was rated at 3880 pounds GVW with a 1400-pound payload capacity and came in standard and sport models.  The pickup box had tie-down rails located low in the bed, a double wall tailgate and a single tailgate latch. 1979-Dodge-D50c The dress-up option package for the standard model included whitewalls, tinted glass, AM radio, sound insulation, cigarette lighter, armrests, exterior trim and a cargo lamp.  The sport model dress-up group featured AM/FM radio, tinted glass, cargo light, raised white letter tires adn several specific items.  Options for all models included air conditioning, mirrors, sunroof, roll bar, grille guard bar, step bumper and cargo box cover.  Power disc/drum brakes were standard on all.
