11980 Audi 4000 Test Drive
For 1980, Audi rebodied the Fox and renamed it the 4000. This stylish new companion to the larger 5000 was offered in 4 door and 2 door sedans. Power from the front wheel drive 4000 came from the well-proven 1.6 L SOHC fuel injected Audi engine rated at 76 horsepower. Early models were available only with the 4 speed manual transmission, but a 3-speed automatic was offered later in the year. The new Audi had rack and pinion steering, independent front suspension with a tube rear axle, and power disc/drum brakes. The passenger compartment has been designed as a safety cell that absorbs impact energy in the event of a collision. The 4000 came with a cloth interior featuring reclining bucket seats and cut-pile carpet. Optional equipment included air conditioning, three-way sunroof, heated seats, AM FM cassette stereo and a tachometer.
