For 1980, this traditional best seller had new, more aerodynamic sheet metal and a projected cruising range of 540 miles, which may be the most important news of all. Chevrolet fitted the Impala Caprice coupes and sedans with 25 gallon fuel tanks, replacing the 21 gallon tanks. Station wagons kept their 22-gallon tank but this year they had the option of filling it with #2 diesel tying it to the corporate 5.7 liter diesel V8. Since fuel conservation was the name of the game, the engine transmission line up had been altered to include a 3.8 liter V6 as standard on all models except the station wagon. And every state but California the wagon used the 4.4 liter V8. This engine was optional in the coupe and sedan, as was the 5-liter V8. However, California cars got the 3.8 L as stock and the 5.0L was the alternative.
I owned a 1980 Caprice Classic 2 door with the 305. I purchased it second hand in 1987. It was burgundy with matching interior. I loved that car and wushed l still had it today.
