41980 Pontiac Grand LeMans & Grand Prix Promotional Presentation
“Turn out the lights… the party’s over”, Willie Nelson lyrics Don Meredeth made famous on Monday nights so long ago, perhaps a premonition of the Pontiac marque, some almost thirty years later. Looking back at the industry, its interesting to see how little has changed. What I mean is, consider the Hybrid buyer of today, unless you are simply attempting to make a statement about being green, the efficiency benefits of this tech vs the cost, and the time it takes to recoup the cost of the tech, in fuel efficiency, is a long road. Similar to Pontiacs message in this presentation of the Grand LeMans verses the smaller Dasher diesel. With their figures, it would take roughly seven years to even the gap in fuel savings, over the cost increase over the diesel compact. Not unlike gas electrics of today. All the while having rode in complete luxury, comfort, and efficiency! Comparing the Grand Prix, and Grand LeMans to cars like the Monarch, or Thunderbird is appropriate, however strange is when Pontiac begins to compare itself to their corporate cousin Buick. Apparently back then GM was all about family contention.

Another winner! I liked the aero update that came a year later for Grand Prix. That LeMans went on to become G-body Bonneville. Thank you for sharing. That song he was singing at the end turned out to be true sadly…
Love the video. It sounds like Don smoked 3 packs of Camels a day…
