The Celica/Supra lineup for 1980 carried over with few changes. The Celica series, which included the 2-door ST and GT plus the 3-door GT liftback, got a new hood, quad rectangular headlamps and reworked taillights. On the Supra, styled aluminum wheels, which were options previously, were added to the standard equipment list.
The basic Celica 90-horsepower 2.2-liter SOHC engine could be matched to the standard (49-state) 4-speed manual transmission, an optional 5-speed manual overdrive (standard in California) or a 3-speed automatic. The slightly longer wheelbase Supra carried a 110-horsepower SOHC six, which came with either the standard 5-speed manual or optional 3-speed automatic.
Both the Celica and the Supra used MacPherson strut front suspension and a live rear axle-positioned with four trailing links. Front/tear stabilizer bars were standard on all models except the low buck ST. The Celica disc/drum brakes were replaced by a disc/disc setup on the Supra.
