Toyota made a number of major changes to the Corolla line for 1980. Along with the Tercel variant, the conventional rear-drive Corollas were given larger, more powerful 1.8-liter SOHC engines. With the exception of the station wagon, they now used coil/coil rather than coil/leaf springs. A 4-speed manual transmission was standard; a 5-speed manual and 3 speed automatic were optional.
The cars were completely re bodied, but the model line still included a 2-door sport coupe, 2-door and four door sedans, a 5-door wagon plus the two lift-backs. Standard models and the station wagon retain round headlamps, while the Deluxe and SR5 models used single rectangular units.
