1981 Fiat Strada Test Drive
Fiat Strada, the “Italian work of art,” was the result of four years of development by the well-known marque. Featuring front engine/front-wheel-drive and an unusual fully independent suspension system, the 5-door hatch, also available in a unique 3-door was designed to meet the growing demand in the American market for a comfortable economy car that performed and handled well. Both the front and rear suspension systems used the MacPherson strut, but the rear had an additional transverse leaf spring that acted as an anti-sway bar. It was very effective in keeping rear wheel road contact under hard cornering conditions, and the rack and pinion steering provided the precise control to make the most of the total suspension package.
