To help dodge its stodgy everyday exterior, Olds product planners devised the ES for Omega. Sexy, yes, sexy – complete with new pliable front polyurethane grille and bumper, the Omega ES was a viable package. It featured a firm ride and handling package, steel belted radial tires, power steering and brakes, sport steering wheel, and a special gauge package. It was available in only one color: silver.
With emissions regulations taking more and more zip out of performance image cars, at least such automobiles resorted to flexing their fenders instead of their muscles. The Oldsmobile Sport coupe came with flexible front fenders made of fiberglass reinforced reaction injection molded plastic. Finished with flexible paint, the fenders gave under minor impacts and returned to their original shape unscathed. The pair saved 10 pounds over the original steel parts.
