The car that would save Chrysler bowed with appropriate fanfare for 1981 as the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant “K-car” compacts. Both offered transverse four-cylinder power, front-wheel drive, and room for four passengers in coupes, sedans, and five-door wagons, priced from around $6000.
The success of these cars allowed Chrysler to pay back money it borrowed from the federal government and return to profitability.
