1982 BMW 528e Test Drive
The “mid-size” sedan in BMW’s lineup , the 5-series, had a subtle but thorough rework for 1982 In this country, the new car beared a 528e badge, the suffix indicating the Eta (high-efficiency) engine concept – higher compression, lower peak-torque rpm, and “intelligent” electronic controls. This new engine displaced 2693 cc; maximum power was down substantially from 1981’s 2.8, but over-the-road performance remained sparkling because of greater mid-range torque.
A more sloped hood and higher rear deck identify the new model and helped it attain a claimed drag coefficient of .396. Some 300 lb were eliminated from the car’s weight, though BMW said the leaner unit body was actually sturdier than the previous one. Lighter weight, a more slippery form, and the high-tech power plant combined to reduce fuel consumption by more that 20% EPA.
