New from Honda for 1981 was a handsome four-door notchback sedan version of the ever-popular fwd Civic, a comfortable and well-equipped gas-saver priced at about $5,800. This and other Civic models had an optional three speed automatic for ’82 that replaced the primitive two-speed unit, in addition to the four-speed and five-speed manual transmissions. Also new for 1982 were rectangular headlamps and black bumpers, along with a new gas-sipping model, the five-speed “FE” (Fuel Economy), rated at 41 mpg in the city and 55 mpg on the highway.
